In harmony with the surroundings and in co-operation with the local villagers,
Matemwe Bungalows offers something different. Enjoy the contrasting colors
of the Indian Ocean, the fine powder sand and the wild bush vegetation. Meet the
friendly villagers, experience the local fish market and explore the ocean reefs
on your doorstep.
Bungalows
The rural northeast coast of Zanzibar is known for its fine weather and
natural beauty. Matemwe Bungalows form a small oasis in the middle of this unspoiled
land. Sixteen individually built bungalows are constructed of local materials,
all directly overlooking the sea. Each room has its own veranda, hammock and stunning
view into the horizon. Robinson Crusoe would feel at home here!
Although TV and telephones have not made it into paradise, some modern comforts
such as solar powered lighting and solar hot showers supply you with that little
extra luxury. The fresh seafood served in our restaurant is a specialty
of the house, with a wonderful mixture of Swahili and European flavors that might
spoil you forever. All produce comes as much as possible from the local market.

Activities
Matemwe, which runs its own PADI dive center, has one of the best scuba
diving sites around Zanzibar, providing an endless variety of fish and corals
to see. Whether a novice, experienced diver or snorkeler, you will be amazed at
the sheer abundance of species in these waters.

If underwater sports are not your cup of tea, you might enjoy a sailing
trip in one of the local Ngalawas, a truly unique experience not to be missed,
or just relax in your hammock as the local regatta sails past on their way to
the fishing grounds. Watch as the sun or moon rises from the sea, laze on the
beach and let time slip by. The choice is up to you at Matemwe Bungalows,
the sunny side of paradise.
