Loisaba Wilderness
|
Located on the edge of the Laikipia Plateau, just 70 km north of
Mount Kenya, this 150 sq. km private wildlife conservancy is in the heart
of the Ewaso eco-system. Incredibly rich in both biodiversity and topography,
Loisaba is in the heartland of the Laikipiak Masai community. Loisaba offers a
rare insight into the cultures, traditions and a way of life that has stood the
test of time.
At 6,500 ft above sea level, Loisaba has a temperate climate making all
activities pleasurable year round. The same size as Tanzania's
Ngorongoro Crater and larger than many of Kenya's National Parks, the
Loisaba wilderness is a haven for more than 250 species of birds and 50
species of wildlife. The area offers some excellent big cat and wild dog
viewing opportunities.

Accommodation
Loisaba Lodge: Built entirely of local materials, the Loisaba Lodge
offers stunning views of Mount Kenya. The seven ensuite rooms all have a private
deck built into the escarpment; all the furniture at the lodge is handmade. The
lodge has a swimming pool and tennis court.

The Star Beds: Exclusive to Loisaba, each Star Bed is a raised, handcrafted
wooden platform sculpted into a kopje of rocks and semi-covered with a thatched
roof. Natural "Mukokoteni beds" can either be wheeled out onto the uncovered area
for a night under the stars or left under the shelter of the roof. Accessible
only by camel, horseback or on foot, guests are guided by a team of traditional
guides to the sites. Each platform has a private toilet with a camp style drum
shower.
Loisaba Cottage: The self-contained and private cottage is built on the
edge of the escarpment from local materials. The location, architecture and
furnishings are simply breathtaking. The Cottage has its own staff and a private,
cliff top swimming pool. It consists of two ensuite bedrooms.
Loisaba Star Camps: Try a unique and personal way to explore and overnight
in undiscovered areas on both the Loisaba Wilderness and the surrounding tribal
trust lands. These turn of the century expeditionary style fly camps can be utilized
on foot, horseback or camel back.

Conservation
Run by the Wilderness Guardian Company, Loisaba is part of a conservation enterprise
in which all profits generated from tourism are dedicated to the conservation
of the 150 sq. km private wilderness area. In addition, Loisaba supports community
health, education and enterprise programs outside its boundaries with the neighboring
Samburu and Laikipiak Masai people.
